Benefits of Poems About Laughter and Mental Health
Short poems about laughter and mental health can explore the relationship between these two topics in creative ways. Maya Angelou famously said “when you laugh, you forget your troubles – even if only temporarily,” which signifies the power of laughter to be used as a survival tool. It’s not just a cheesy feel-good phrase but real words of advice that have been taken seriously by many. You don’t need to study poetry for years to understand it either (which is good news). So why not take advantage of this insight from one of our most renowned writers and start using these short poems about laughter and mental health to help boost your mood?
Reflection on the Power of Poems About Laughter as The Best Medicine
Poems about laughter are becoming more popular these days, and it can be confusing to remember that laughter really is the best medicine. It’s often easy to believe that there’s some kind of magical, mystical power in funny poems that will instantly fix any problem. Unfortunately, life does not work like that. A single poem may bring a few moments of peace and joy; however, lasting healing needs much more sustained effort. So, it’s important to temper expectations when thinking about the value of humorous poetry as a solution for our struggles with life.

To Laugh or Not to Laugh
By: Ellen Fayhey
Laugh at me or laugh with me,
It’s really up to you
I prefer the latter,
It’s the ‘funner’ thing to do!
Is it funny or is it not?
Depends on how you see.
But, a little bit of laughter
Can fill a room with glee!
Text someone an ‘lol’,
Or simply say ‘haha!’
Either way, you’ll make ’em smile
Instead of ‘wah, wah, wah!’
So try a little laughter,
And do it right away!
It’s sure to change your outlook,
And brighten up your day!
Your Laughter
By Pablo Neruda
Take bread away from me, if you wish,
take air away, but
do not take from me your laughter.
Do not take away the rose,
the lance flower that you pluck,
the water that suddenly
bursts forth in joy,
the sudden wave
of silver born in you.
My struggle is harsh and I come back
with eyes tired
at times from having seen
the unchanging earth,
but when your laughter enters
it rises to the sky seeking me
and it opens for me all
the doors of life.
My love, in the darkest
hour your laughter
opens, and if suddenly
you see my blood staining
the stones of the street,
laugh, because your laughter
will be for my hands
like a fresh sword.
Next to the sea in the autumn,
your laughter must raise
its foamy cascade,
and in the spring, love,
I want your laughter like
the flower I was waiting for,
the blue flower, the rose
of my echoing country.
Laugh at the night,
at the day, at the moon,
laugh at the twisted
streets of the island,
laugh at this clumsy
boy who loves you,
but when I open
my eyes and close them,
when my steps go,
when my steps return,
deny me bread, air,
light, spring,
but never your laughter
for I would die.
Why Don’t You Laugh
Poet: Unknown
Why don’t you laugh, dear boys, when troubles come,
Instead of sitting ’round so sour and glum?
You cannot have all play,
And sunshine every day;
When troubles come, I say, why don’t you laugh?
Why don’t you laugh, dear girls? ‘Twill ever help to soothe
The aches and pains. No road in life is smooth;
There’s many an unseen bump,
And many a hidden stump
O’er which you’ll have to jump. Why don’t you laugh?
Why don’t you laugh? Don’t let your spirits wait;
Don’t sit and cry because the milk you’ve split;
If you would mend it now,
Pray let me tell you how:
Just milk another cow! Why don’t you laugh?
Why don’t you laugh, and make us all laugh, too,
And keep us mortals all from getting blue?
A laugh will always win;
If you can’t laugh, just grin –
Come on, let’s all join in! Why don’t you laugh?
The Power of a Laugh
By Lori Ann Peterson
Laughter is the key to unlocking your innermost strength,
It lifts you up and gives you wings for whatever life throws at length.
So before you go on with all of your various daily chores,
Just take a moment to lighten up and give yourself a few laughs!
Laughter can make you feel so much better than the occasional frown,
It helps bring clarity and peace when life wears your spirit down.
Sometimes a hearty giggle is just what we all need to get through the day,
And if life’s burdens seem too much, just laugh it all away!
So if you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed with life’s daily grind,
Just take a deep breath and exhale then let your laughter take its time.
A good belly-laugh can do wonders for the mind and soul,
And brighten up the mood of everyone around you with its whole.
Yes, the power of a laugh is something that cannot be denied-
It can bring joy and happiness to every corner of your life.
So if you’re feeling lost or alone and a bit down on your luck,
Just remember the healing magical powers of laughter and a good F*ck.
Laugh
Poet: F. W. Sanderson
‘Tis by the heart the secret’s told,
‘Tis by the smile we’re young or old,
‘Tis as the life its joy shall hold,
It is the laugh reveals the soul.
It was herself she despised.
Criticized. Dehumanized. A
nd no one seemed to realize
Her happiness was a disguise
Tricking foolish eyes.
But a few –too few
Were far to wise
To be deceived by the lies; T
o not see through her disguise.
They declared her sanity to be feign;
She was trapped inside her own damaged brain.
She had lost her ability to reason;
Her only solution was constantly scheming.
How could she have felt so safe In such a dangerous place?
Oh, it was hard,
So hard to ungrasp
From the self-destructive thoughts
That had taken over so fast.
Her life had been stolen,
Yet she was not broken.
She gained her freedom back;
Put her life back intact.
Recovery seemed impossible:
An impassable obstacle.
But eventually she did it.
How? She cannot say
But when she looks for tomorrow
She sees a brighter day.
And there’s now light in her eyes
And laughter in her step.
She has been able to realize
Her happiness will not ebb.
She has found salvation
Within her own mind.
She has reached illumination
Her pursuits in life aligned.
Her gratitude grows every day she walks the earth
She has, at last, established her self-worth.
MANIC DEPRESSION (BIPOLAR DISORDER) THE GOOD STUFF
This next poem won 8th place in a poetry contest on mental health.
By Valerie Ryan
Because of the depths I appreciate more the heights
Because of the heights I know I have the might
Not the might like in Maybe
But the Bolt like in Tight
The might to prevail
The heights tell me:
Go Sail
Not the heights like in Everest
But more like the Poconos
Some call them hills, bumps in the road
I call them wills
Like I Will;
I Won’t just Try
I can reach for the sky
So the ups and downs
They may not be my friends understand
They are not me
They are part of who I am
I am proud nowadays
In recovery I can say
Wellness is mine
Most of the time
And if I slip up, set back, fall down
I know I’ll get up
And go out on the town
I see more,
I feel more
I intuit more,
I know myself I’m aware,
I’m mindful I CARE
It’s a gift In a way, experienced every day
And as Lady Gaga said “Baby, I was born this way!”
Think Happy Thoughts (Powerful Life Poetry)
Laughter
Poet: Edgar A. Guest
Laughter sort o’ settles breakfast better than digestive pills;
Found it, somehow in my travels, cure for every sort of ills;
When the hired help have riled me with their slipshod, careless ways,
An’ I’m bilin’ mad an’ cussin’ an’ my temper’s all ablaze,
If the calf gets me to laughin’ while they’re teachin’ him to feed
Pretty soon I’m feelin’ better, ’cause I’ve found the cure I need.
Like to start the day with laughter; when I’ve had a peaceful night,
An’ can greet the sun all smilin’, that day’s goin’ to be all right.
But there’s nothing goes to suit me, when my system’s full of bile;
Even horses quit their pullin’ when the driver doesn’t smile,
But they’ll buckle to the traces when they hear a glad giddap,
Just as though they like to labor for a cheerful kind o’ chap.
Laughter keeps me strong an’ healthy. You can bet I’m all run down,
Fit for doctor folks an’ nurses when I cannot shake my frown.
Found in farmin’ laughter’s useful, good for sheep an’ cows an’ goats;
When I’ve laughed my way through summer, reap the biggest crop of oats.
Laughter’s good for any business, leastwise so it seems to me
Never knew a smilin’ feller but was busy as could be.
Sometimes sit an’ think about it, ponderin’ on the ways of life,
Wonderin’ why mortals gladly face the toil an care an’ strife,
Then I come to this conclusion—take it now for what it’s worth
It’s the joy of laughter keeps us plodding on this stretch of earth.
Men the fun o’ life are seeking—that’s the reason for the calf
Spillin’ mash upon his keeper—men are hungry for a laugh.

An Unspoken Bond
Laughter can be the best remedy for a difficult day.
It’s the sort of chipper sound that brings more joy than we can say.
We giggle and guffaw,
we chuckle and shout – it comes from deep within us
when life is just too hard to pour out.
When something’s funny, how can you not share?
From hilarious puns to uncontrolled snare!
Let laughs fill the room;
Let humor never subside – with grins so wide your cheeks will soon divide.
Silliness and joy always have a place – an unspoken bond that links us in this space!
Grin, Grin, Grin
Poet: Catherine Pulsifer
A good laugh can take away the blues
It is up to us, we can choose.
You always feel better when you
Have a good laugh, that is so true.
Find a reason to laugh each day
Otherwise, you’ll find yourself going gray.
Don’t hold it in,
Laugh and grin, grin, grin!
First Laugh
Poet: Althea Randolph
I thought the silvery rippling notes
Were sung by trilling bird;
But now I know the merry tones
Were Baby’s laugh I heard!
A Laugh
Poet: Ripley Dunlap Saunders
A laugh is just like sunshine,
It freshens all the day.
It tips the peak of life with light
And drives the clouds away.
The soul grows glad that hears it
And feels its courage strong;
A laugh is just like sunshine
For cheering folks along.
A laugh is just like music,
It lingers in the heart,
And where its melody is heard,
The ills of life depart;
And happy thoughts come crowding
Its joyful notes to greet;
A laugh is just like music
For making living sweet!
Laughter
Poet Henry R. Elliot
Are you worsted in a fight?
Laugh it off.
Are you cheated of your right?
Laugh it off.
Don’t make tragedy of trifles,
Don’t shoot butterflies with rifles —
Laugh it off.
Does your work get into kinks?
Laugh it off.
Are you near all sorts of brinks?
Laugh it off.
If enjoyment you are after.
There’s no recipe like laughter —
Laugh it off.
Four Things
Poet: Dorothy Parker
Four be the things I am wiser to know:
Idleness, sorrow, a friend, and a foe.
Four be the things I’d been better without:
Love, curiosity, freckles, and doubt.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
Three be the things I shall have till I die:
Laughter and hope and a sock in the eye.
The Happy Man
Poet: Ellen Johnston
Laugh on, laugh on! thou happy man,
While life is young and bright.
For it is not in old withered age that man can
And delight;
Laugh on – and be what thou hast been –
And when that thou art gone,
Thy memory will be cherished in records yet unknown
I Died of Laughter
by Wuraola
I died of laughter.
When they speak of me,
they will recall a bowl of mouth
either receiving mirth or pouring out laughter.
Little suns,
Playing hide and seek,
Behind lashes, behind lips.
They will say,
“But she was always laughing
So happy and full of life”
They don’t know the litres of life laughter draws from your well – being with each blinding smile.
They saw fireworks where forest fires burned,
And excitement whenever I
shuffled skeletons from one closet to the next.
They saw me relaxed at home when all I ever did was
shift and shift and shift until I found the perfect spot in a coffin.
They will always remember the smiles,
not knowing that even in death,
I’ll always die and it wouldn’t be of too much laughter.
Sing A Song
Poet: Florence Adella Bertels
Sing a song of victory,
A heart brimful of cry
Can be soon changed to laughter,
A song will drown a sigh.
Sing of truth that fails not,
Of God who never sleeps;
Sing with confidence in Him
Who His people keeps.
Sunlight chases shadow.
Healthful thoughts chase gloom;
Then good cheer and courage
In the heart find room.
Sing a song of victory,
Life’s strings all in tune;
Singing Faith will soon transform
Night to day’s full noon.
Laugh A Little Bit
Poet: Edmund V. Cooke
Here’s a motto just your fit.
Laugh a little bit.
When you think you’re trouble hit.
Laugh a little bit.
Look misfortune in the face.
Brave the beldame’s rude grimace;
Ten to one ’twill yield its place
If you have the wit and grit
Just to laugh a little bit.
Keep your face with sunshine lit; –
Laugh a little bit.
Gloomy shadows off will flit
If you have the wit and grit
Just to laugh a little bit.
Cherish this as sacred writ,
Laugh a little bit.
Keep it with you, sample it
Laugh a little bit.
Little ills will sure betide you,
Fortune may not sit beside you.
Men may knock and fame deride you.
But you’ll mind them not a whit
If you laugh a little bit.
Laugh
Poet: Unknown
Build for yourself a strong box,
Fashion each part with care;
Fit it with hasp and padlock,
Put all your troubles there.
Hide therein all your failures,
And each hitter cup you quaff,
Lock all your heartaches within it.
Then sit on the lid and laugh.
Tell no one of its contents;
Never its secrets share;
Drop in your cares and worries,
Keep them forever there.
Hide them from sight so completely
The world will never dream half;
Fasten the top down securely,
Then sit on the lid and laugh.
I Love A Laugh
Poet: Effie May
I love a laugh, a wild, gay laugh,
Fresh from the fount of feeling.
That speaks a heart enshrined within,
It’s joy revealing.
I love a laugh, a wild, gay laugh:
O, who would always sorrow,
And wear a sad and woful face.
And fear the morrow?
I love a laugh – this world would be,
At best, a dreary dwelling,
If heart could never speak to heart,
It’s pleasure telling.
I love a laugh – it cheers the heart
Of age, bowed down with sadness,
To hear the music in the tones
Of childhood’s gladness.
Then frown not at a wild, gay laugh.
Or chide the merry-hearted;
A cheerful heart and smiling face
Should ne’er be parted.
